Good News !!!
Callaway Gardens Third Annual Plein Air Paint Out, Art Show and Sale

I was accepted into this event which will be held the week of April 15 - 22. There are many wonderful local, regional and nationally known artists that submitted and were accepted. I feel honored to have been accepted into this event.

The week before that I will be participating in the First Plein Air Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada from Wed., April 11 - Sunday, April 15. This will be a fantastic event with programs and demonstrations from some of our best known artists, and the chance to watch them paint ... or paint along with them ... on location in the Red Rock Park located just outside of Las Vegas. Yeah, I am excited for both these events!

Great News!!!!
I won a lodging in Wexford, Ireland for a week and the entry fee into the following plein air festival!

Art In The Open
The 4th annual Irish festival of plein air painting was held on July 29 / 30/ 31 2011

Art in the Open plein air painting festival has been devised and organised by a group of friends in Wexford, Ireland, who share an interest in painting together outdoors. In 2007 they formed South East Plein Air (SEPA) outdoor painting group. Some are professional artists, some keen amateurs and in order to learn more about outdoor painting and to share their interest with other artists, it was decided to hold a festival of plein air painting annually in Wexford.

I was there for the week and also submitted paintings to their competition. The paintings can be seen here on the web site. I painted 13 plein air paintings ... mostly in pastel, but a few in oil. It was rather dreary and rainy a few of the days ... but I expected that and was prepared. I submitted three paintings to the competition and left them for the remainder of the show when I travelled back home. One painting sold .... and they shipped the other two back to me. After returning home, I created about 30 more paintings and held a showing for my patrons, closest friends and family! We had a great time and I sold over 20 of the paintings!

The painting to the right was used as one of the pieces I submitted to win entry and lodging for the competition.

Also .... the painting shown here, "River Entrance" which is a 12" x 9" pastel plein air painting was accepted into the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) 18th Juried Exhibition. Approximately 85 paintings were selected by a panel of three jurors for inclusion in the exhibition. Jurors were Anne Hevener, Rita Kirkman and Desmond O'Hagan.  The Judge of Awards is Liz Haywood-Sullivan.

An opening reception was held at the Hispanic Arts Building, New Mexico State Fairgrounds on June 1, 2011. Many wonderful paintings were hung and many of the artists that created them were in attendance. It was a wonderful experience and I felt honored to have been accepted into this show!

A Winning Painting!

Madison Paint Out and Historic Tour of Homes

I participated in this paint out on Friday, May 6. It was in conjunction with their Madison in May Spring Tour of Homes. This is a beautiful community located East of Atlanta.

We had a beautiful day to paint and talk to the people attending the tour of homes. I painted at two different historic homes. The first one was called "The Boat House" and was at one time a residence for the wife of Woodrow Wilson. The painting I did at this location won the "First Place Award." What a surprise and honor! The title of the painting is "Boat House Roses" and is a 12" x 9" pastel.

A Solo Show -- "It's The Journey"
Blue Ridge, GA
August, 2009

The name of my show was "It's The Journey" and this is my very favorite saying when I am teaching classes or workshops. It  seems to help the students get over the "precious" paper or canvas -- or even the painting at its halfway point. I thought it an appropriate name for my show for this reason -- artists are always taking journeys to paint at different locations -- but I think we also take many journeys of the mind to produce our work.

The solo show was held in Blue Ridge, GA in the Historic Fannin Courthouse which now houses the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association in August. There were over 100 paintings in pastels, oils and acrylics and the reception was well attended by well over 100 people. People were met and talked to and sales were made. The show was quite successful!

Musical Waters
2nd Best in Show

First National Juried Exhibition
Southern Appalachian Artist Guild &
Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association
Reception: October 18, 2008
Juror: Alan Flattmann

The Stand
People's Choice Award

Good News!!!! I had two paintings accepted into this show -- which I consider an honor. Even better -- I had my painting "Musical Waters" chosen for the "Second Best in Show"! The other painting accepted was "The Stand" and it won the "People's Choice Award!" You can click on the images to see both of these paintings or from the "Studio Paintings" page of my web site.

The Reception and Awards Presentation was held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 from 5:30 - 7:00, at the historic Fannin County Courthouse which houses the Richard Lowe Evans Gallery. There were 160 artists that entered the competition from 23 states -- and when the selection was done, there were 19 states represented in the show. This was a two-dimensional and three dimensional show: paintings, photography, jewelry, sculpture, etc. with eighty pieces of 2D and thirty-six 3D pieces accepted by Mr. Flattmann.  We are already planning for the show next year -- deadline for entry will be around the end of July as it was this year. Check out the page for the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association for the current year prospectus.
